Bali Fresh Female Farmers Revolving Fund Design

Clients: PT DIF Nusantara and AusAID
Partner: Bali Fresh

Project overview

Starling Resources worked with PT. Dif Nusantara, agriculture produce growing and trading fi rm in Indonesia to develop business capacity training, and to design a revolving fund implementation strategy, for a series of greenhouse farmer cooperatives (women owned and run) in various locations in Bali. The cooperatives in turn grow and supply produce to Bali Fresh, a wholesale produce marketer in Sanur Bali.

Challenges

The women involved in the farming cooperative came together to create new opportunities for themselves and their families in partnership with PT DIF Nusantara and the Bali Fresh program. They had very little farming experience and skills to begin with and no business training. PT DIF Nusantara developed a program or training on the technical aspects of greenhouse farming, providing the implements and inputs required. Missing still was a business training program or a mechanism for the farmer groups to secure funds and manage their greenhouses.

Approach and Outcome

Starling assisted in the formalization of the farmer groups, and designed and delivered a series of training and capacity development interventions and mentoring activities for the groups as well as the member households. In addition Starling designed a revolving fund with the cooperatives, starting with a grant from AusAID, which became central to a repayment scheme which allowed the farmer groups to eventually pay for and own the greenhouses and continue to supply to PT DIF Nusantara. Our partners planned facilitate the replication of the approach in other locations to create new jobs and new opportunities in areas where economic activities are relatively low.
